Two leaders were on Friday charged with incitement and disobedience in connection with fracas that arose at a disputed area between the Kwale and Taita Taveta counties on August 3, this year.
The State claimed that the two illegally erected a signpost suggesting the disputed area is in Taita Taveta. Taita Taveta assembly speaker Meshack Maghanga and Marungu MCA, Paul Waweru, were accused of erecting the the signpost on August 3.
The controversial sign post read 'Taita Taveta county government border. Karibuni Taita Taveta'. The two pleaded not guilty to the charge before Kwale Senior Principal Magistrate, Cosmus Maundu. They were released on Sh80,000 cash bail each and required to deposit Sh500,000 bond each.
The prosecution told the court that the two wrote the words on two sign boards, indicating or implying that it was or might have been desirable to mark the boundary within Kwale County in an act that was calculated to cause breach of peace. Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu said although the boundary row exists there should be proper ways to solve it. The case will be mentioned on September 2.
