CID officers killed in Kiambu road crash

Two senior officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were killed and another injured in an accident along Kiambu Road in Nairobi yesterday.

The three were headed to Siaya for the burial of Maurice Amatta, a CID officer in charge of forensic investigations, who died two weeks ago.

They were travelling in an official car when the head-on collision occurred at 4.30a.m. near the Kiambu bypass junction. The deceased are chief inspectors attached to the CID headquarters along Kiambu Road. One died on the spot while the other passed on in hospital.

The injured officer and the driver of the other car, a media house employee, were admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital and Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, respectively.

“Our officers are investigating the cause of the accident,” said Kiambu County Police Commander James Mugera.

Amatta, whose burial the officers were supposed to attend, died at the Mater Hospital in Nairobi after a short illness. He had driven himself to the hospital complaining of stomach ache. The 59-year-old was one of the leading officers trained in forensic investigations and was instrumental in the setting up of the forensic laboratory at CID headquarters.
