Gachagua impeachment: How Senators voted

Politics

The Senate voted Wednesday night to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after more than 45 senators upheld five of the 11 charges brought against him by the National Assembly.

The Speaker set the threshold at 45 votes before the lawmakers began voting.

The first charge that sealed Gachagua’s fate involved his remarks on shareholding, followed by accusations of violating the independence of judges, breaching his oath of office, committing offenses under the NCIC Act, and undermining the National Intelligence Service.

However, some charges were dismissed due to insufficient evidence and the National Assembly’s failure to substantiate the claims.

A majority of senators found that Gachagua did not violate the authority of the President, the Cabinet, or devolution, nor was he involved in economic crimes, made inciteful remarks, disobeyed the President, or bullied state and public officers.

Preliminary votes on each charge captured at the Senate.

As a result, the Senate upheld the National Assembly’s decision to impeach the former Mathira MP. The National Assembly had debated the motion a week earlier after Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse introduced a motion seeking Gachagua’s impeachment.

The Assembly voted to impeach Gachagua, with 282 MPs supporting the motion.
