National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has announced public participation in the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, October 4.

The exercise will take place across all 47 counties.

The Clerk of the National Assembly will communicate full details through media advertisements beginning October 2.

Wetang'ula noted that all parliamentary activities from Thursday, October 3, to Monday, October 7, will be suspended to facilitate public input.

The House Business Committee will seek a resolution to suspend the House sitting on Thursday and hold a morning session on Tuesday, October 8, to discuss the motion.

Gachagua can appear in person or through legal representation between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The move follows Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse formally tabling the impeachment motion, stating the grounds are concrete enough for removal from office.

Wetang'ula read the motion on Tuesday, confirming that 291 MPs supported it, surpassing the 117 lawmakers required for tabling.

Mutuse provided a 100-page document with evidence supporting his grounds for impeachment.

“Article 145 (1) of the Constitution provides that a member of the National Assembly supported by at least a third of all the members may move a motion for impeachment of the president or deputy on the grounds of gross violation of the Constitution,” said Wetang'ula.
