A photo of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu wearing the distinctive and dreaded striped prison uniform has sparked widespread reactions online, given the rarity of such an image.
In the photo, a visibly subdued Waititu sits across from another unidentified man, who is also clad in the same uniform.
Kenyans flooded the comment section, calling for the arrest of all politicians implicated in corruption cases.
Meek Mike Nderitu said: “Let the same law apply to all corrupt leaders, regardless of their political allegiance. That way, the fight will be genuine!”
“All convicted corrupt politicians must be behind bars!! All of them!” Musonge Munialo also echoed the same words.
Others, like Amoh Jeruiyot, raised tough questions: “I don't support corruption but why is the law only applicable to those criticizing the government?”
“It will be very hypocritical to judge him whereas we have powerful figures in the government who are as equally corrupt and worse than him by far, but they are protected,” Rakel Lambs seemed to agree with Jeruiyot’s thought.
As usual, some made fun of the situation, like Wycliffe Musundi, who wrote: “The guy has decided that he better serve that sentence he'll come out rich, than release that money and live poor.”
Waititu and his wife, Susan Wangari, were found guilty in February of conflict of interest and dealing in suspect property after corruptly receiving millions from Kiambu County through a multi-million-shilling roads tender.
The court subsequently fined Waititu KSh 54.5 million or, in default, sentenced him to a 12-year jail term for receiving kickbacks from Charles Mbuthia, a director of Testimony Enterprises Ltd, five years ago.
He has, however, renewed his bid for bail, arguing that there was insufficient clear evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in the KSh 588 million graft case.
