A suspected serial fraudster will remain in custody for an additional six days pending a mental assessment.

This comes after her advocate informed the court that D.W.G was not in the right state of mind to stand trial, having allegedly been struggling with a mental health issue.

The suspect appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Joseph Karanja, who issued a directive for a mental assessment report to be prepared and presented in court.

The suspect has yet to respond to the charge of obtaining a total of Sh1,430,000 from Gladys Njeru Mungai under the false pretense that she would secure jobs for Mungai’s two sons in the UK and Canada.

Mungai explained that she was required to pay Sh450,000 for each son before the process could begin. She stated that she paid a total of Sh900,000 in three installments over the span of one week. The complainant’s friend, who also wanted his son to travel to the UK, paid Sh450,000.

The accused promised that the three sons would be able to travel to the UK by June last year. However, this promise never materialised. The suspect then said the travel had been rescheduled for August. Even then, the three young men were still unable to travel.

In September, the complainant’s sister told her about a cheaper opportunity in Canada. She contacted the accused again, who told her that the fee was only Sh80,000, as the agency processing the travel documents for work was owned by her daughter. The complainant was persuaded. She paid the sum and was told to wait for three weeks, but the opportunity never materialised.

The accused continued to lead her in circles. She later disappeared from her home in Mwiki, Nairobi, and the matter was reported to the police. The suspect was subsequently arrested at her hideout in Karatina, Nyeri County.

The State counsel informed the court that the suspect was facing similar charges in the Makadara courts. The court deferred the plea to allow the accused to undergo a mental assessment.
