Maraga: Leaders must take responsibility for abductions

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has condemned the rise in abductions, particularly targeting social media users, calling for leaders to take responsibility in addressing the growing insecurity.

In his New Year message on Monday, December 30, Maraga stressed the need for fidelity to the Constitution and action.

"This year has not been easy for many families. The killing, maiming and abduction of young Kenyans have tested our institutions," said Maraga.

Maraga urged leaders to uphold constitutionalism and the rule of law.

"The responsibility of ensuring that instruments of power are not abused lies with office bearers," he noted, insisting that political rhetoric alone will not address the issue.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported 13 abduction cases in the last three months, bringing the total to 82 since the June protests.

Six victims were abducted in December alone, with several still missing.

President William Ruto, who had previously denied the existence of abductions, acknowledged the issue but urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s safety.

"We will ensure we end the abductions which are being talked about in the country. We want every Kenyan to live peacefully. I also urge parents to be responsible in taking care of their children. As a government, we will also do our part," Ruto said on Friday.
