Women in Nairobi’s Githurai face a pressing health challenge with rising cancer diagnoses and limited knowledge about prevention and early detection.

The urgent need for education on this critical issue prompted a recent Cancer Awareness Event in Githurai 45.

Over 300 women attended, seeking information and resources to better understand cancer.

The Health & Wellness Committee of Citadel Women Initiatives (CWI) identified the need to tackle these health concerns.

The event provided attendees with insights into self-examinations and proper nutrition.

Focus Hospital contributed by offering free breast and cervical screenings and extended these services for an additional week.

CWI is a community-based organisation dedicated to empowering women through health, education, and emotional support.

Faith Mbiyu, chairperson of CWI, said, "We saw the significance of this event in equipping our community with life-saving information."

The event featured health professionals, including cancer survivors, nutritionists and doctors, who shared their expertise.

Joan Wangari, a pancreatic cancer survivor for 13 years, described her journey and the emotional and financial toll of her diagnosis.

"I decided to seek medical help after experiencing symptoms like weight loss and lack of appetite," Wangari explained.

"The psychological effects can be overwhelming. There is life after cancer; go get checked because early diagnosis saves lives."

CWI aims to empower women through health education and support, fostering a community of informed individuals who can take charge of their health.
