Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has urged public institutions to integrate governance standards into performance evaluations to improve accountability and service delivery.
Speaking during the 13th Champions of Governance Awards gala in Nairobi, Koskei said embedding ethical leadership and transparency in performance contracts would align public sector operations with best practices.
“Embedding governance parameters into performance evaluations will ensure public institutions uphold higher standards and deliver better services to Kenyans,” said Koskei.
The event, organised by the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS), honoured organisations excelling in governance across sectors, including agriculture, finance, and county governments.
Koskei praised ICS for its role in promoting transparency and accountability, noting that its work aligns with government goals to build trust in public institutions.
ICS Chair Pius Nduatih said 34 entries were reviewed by 28 assessors and a quality control team to ensure fairness.
“These awards highlight the transformative power of good governance and inspire all sectors to strengthen their practices,” said Nduatih.
Deputy Chief of Staff in the Executive Office of the President, Performance and Delivery Management Eliud Owalo, who also spoke at the ceremony, urged organisations to ensure that governance frameworks are actively practised, not just in place.
He said transparency, stakeholder engagement and effective communication are vital for organisations to thrive in a dynamic environment.
Among the standout performers at the event was the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), which received several accolades, including 2nd Runner-Up in the Public Service Category of the Champions of Governance Award, First Runner-Up for Chairman of the Year for Charles Karondo, and Second Runner-Up for Corporation Secretary of the Year, awarded to CS Joyce Mukururi.
The annual awards aim to encourage accountability and ethical leadership in both public and private sectors.
