Kabogo's Cabinet appointment marks political career turnaround

The appointment of William Kabogo to President William Ruto’s Cabinet on Thursday marks a significant turning point in the political journey of the former Kiambu governor.

Once a prominent figure in Kiambu politics, Kabogo’s influence waned after his loss to the now impeached former governor, Ferdinand Waititu, in the 2017 elections.

His attempt to recapture the governorship in 2022 was also unsuccessful, as he was defeated by Kimani Wamatangi, a two-term senator.

Kabogo is the party leader of the Tujibebe Wakenya Party.

For over a decade, Kabogo has remained in the political wilderness, with his efforts to rebuild his political career meeting limited success. However, his recent elevation to the Cabinet offers him a fresh opportunity to re-establish his influence and relevance on the national stage.

Some political analysts believe his appointment was meant to consolidate the president’s support base in Kiambu and the larger Mt Kenya region, a critical bloc in Kenya’s political landscape.

With unwavering determination, Kabogo has weathered monumental challenges to rise to prominence.

His political journey began in 2002 when he seemingly appeared from nowhere, entering the political scene with few people having heard of him.

After losing the Kanu nomination to vie for the Juja parliamentary seat, Kabogo joined the Sisi Kwa Sisi party and went on to clinch victory, marking the start of his political career.

In 2007, Juja residents witnessed a fiercely contested battle between Kabogo and George Thuo, famously dubbed the “battle of choppers” due to the opulence displayed during the campaigns.

Despite his efforts, Kabogo lost to the late Thuo. However, unwilling to accept defeat, Kabogo successfully petitioned Thuo’s election.

In the ensuing by-election, he delivered a landslide victory, overcoming the odds, even as the Kibaki government campaigned heavily in Thuo’s favour.

He completed his term as Juja MP in 2012 and made history by becoming the first governor of Kiambu County, a key region in Kenya’s political landscape.

Known for his boldness, he often clashed with party leaders, including a high-profile disagreement with Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua over his support for then Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kabogo’s relentless drive and political acumen may have played a role in President Ruto’s decision to appoint him, even though he has been less active in recent political circles.

His journey exemplifies a fearless approach to leadership and a knack for navigating Kenya’s dynamic political arena.
