As the Siaya County Secondary School Term Two games draw near, the spotlight is firmly on Ng’iya Girls High School who have set their sights on regional glory.

The games, set to commence on June 19 at Chianda High School in Rarieda, promise intense competition as schools vie for a place in the high-stakes regional games.

Ng’iya Girls, known for their prowess in basketball 3x3, volleyball, and racket games, are entering the county level with high ambitions.

The team aims to qualify for the regional games, driven by their recent stellar performance at the Alego-Usonga Sub County games.

In basketball, the team exhibited sheer dominance, overwhelming their opponents with scores that left no doubt about their skill.

"We’ve had an excellent run in the sub-county games, which has bolstered our confidence," said Naftali Ambala, Ng’iya Girls basketball coach.

"Our girls have shown tremendous improvement, and with the momentum we have, I believe we are well-prepared for the county games."

Last year marked Ng’iya Girls' first appearance at the nationals, a historic achievement that has only fueled their determination. Ambala is optimistic about their prospects, asserting that this year's squad is even stronger.

"We were runners-up at both the county and regional levels last year. This time, we are aiming for the title," he added.

Their journey to the top is supported by their sub-county victories, where they decimated Obambo Girls 21-00, outplayed Mbaga Girls 21-8, and crushed Father Gulick Girls 21-2 in a series of dominant round-robin matches.

In volleyball, Ng’iya Girls are equally ambitious. Coach Kevin Olaka has set a target of reaching at least the semifinals, a step up from their preliminary stage exit last year. Despite fielding a young team comprised mainly of Form Ones and Form Twos, Olaka is confident about their chances.

"We are in a rebuilding phase, but we are making significant progress," Olaka noted. "The goal is to advance systematically and with minimal pressure. Last year, we learned valuable lessons from facing strong teams like Aluor Girls and Nyakongo. This year, we aim to perform better."

Ng’iya Girls' volleyball journey to the county games has been impressive. They triumphed over Father Gulik Uradi Girls 3-1 and Siaya Township 3-1 in the group stages.

They then beat Dibuoro Secondary 3-1 and secured the sub-county title with a thrilling 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Mbaga Girls. Olaka is particularly confident in the leadership of Form Two student Spinker Akoth, the Alego-Usonga Volleyball Girls MVP.

In racket games, Ng’iya will field a strong contingent, with eight students set to compete in the county finals.

Sandra Tindi, Purity Awuor, Annabel Gloria, Emily Atieno, and Maya Angeloi will represent the school in table tennis, while Celyne Lyne, Ashlyne Kamais, and Divina Valary will take on the badminton competition.
