Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has urged managements of restaurants and public places to bar all unvaccinated adults from accessing their services.

This comes barely a week since the Ministry issued a new directive to public spaces, directing them to bar unvaccinated clients from their premises during the Festive Season.

In a statement on Tuesday, December 27, Kagwe urged Kenyans to avoid crowded places as he raised concern over the increase of the infection positivity rate in the last 24 hours.

“I have noted with great concern the increase in the positivity rate in the last 24 hours. Today the positivity rate is at 37.6 per cent,” he said.

Then went on “Even as we continue to enjoy the festivities, let us remain cautious & vigilant as we are still in the midst of a pandemic. Where possible, I would like to urge Kenyans, not to engage in mass parties, but if they have to, do it outdoors and observe the Ministry of Health Covid-19 guidelines and protocols,”.

Kagwe’s statement comes at a time when another 1,596 people have tested positive for the disease, from a sample size of 4,242 tested in the last 24 hours.

This has pushed the positivity rate up by about five per cent from the previous 32.6 per cent to 37.6 per cent.

At the same time, three patients have succumbed to the virus, bringing the total fatalities to 5, 364.

Additionally, another 330 patients have recovered from the virus, 196 of them being from various health facilities across the country and the other 134 were from home-based care.

“Total recoveries now stand at 250,326 of whom 201,604 are from the Home-Based Care and Isolation program, while 48,722 are from various health facilities,” the CS said.

By December 26, a total of 9, 579,456 people had been vaccinated. Out of these, 5,639,933 are partially vaccinated while 3, 939, 523 are fully vaccinated.

The government targets to have 10million Kenyan adults vaccinated by December 31, 2021.
