The glitz and glamour of stardom failed to shield these high-profile marriages from heartbreak. We explore Kenya’s most dramatic celebrity break-ups of 2024.

King Kaka and Nana Owiti

Kenyans were stunned when rapper King Kaka and his wife, Nana Owiti, jointly announced the end of their 13-year marriage. Their statement, both heartfelt and sombre, reflected on the memories they shared and the family they built together.

“We honestly never thought we would one day write a statement like this, but life happens,” they wrote. “After much reflection and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end our relationship. Over the course of 13 years, we have shared countless memories, built a life together, and most importantly, raised three incredible children who will always be our top priority.” 

Size 8 and DJ Mo

Songstress and actor Size 8 revealed her split from DJ Mo, after 11 years together. In an Instagram story, she stated that marriage can thrive by God’s grace, and sometimes it falters, but in every situation, God is still in control!

She went on to say, “Having been married for 11 years, I now begin my journey into singlehood. Nevertheless, God is still on the throne; I honor you, Yahweh.”

The couple, who married in September 2013, have two children.

Mungai Eve and Director Trevor

When content creator Mungai Eve confirmed her breakup with Director Trevor during an interview with Andrew Kibe, many were not surprised. Kibe had been called prophet of doom by the fans of the two, having instigated that the two would not last. Trevor was the first to let the cat out of the bag when he announced their five year professional and personal partnership. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago,” he wrote.

Since then, the ex-couple has been engaged in a war of words online, exchanging barbs directed at each other.

Flaqo and Keranta

Funny man Flaqo found himself in a tight spot after news went viral that his then girlfriend Keranta had allegedly cheated on him. She had posted a YouTube video titled Starting Over Again mentioning moving out and embracing new beginnings, which fueled rumours of a breakup. Despite addressing fan inquiries with humour, Keranta later clarified on her social media that while she and Flaqo had split, they still respected each other.

Simon and Sarah Kabu

Entrepreneurs Sarah and Simon Kabu got the internet buzzing when a video of the Sarah appeared on several social media platforms in an altercation with an identified woman. The two founder of Bonfire Adventures called off their marriage after years of working and thriving together in both their personal and professional lives.

Later, Sarah’s lawyers Mwenda Njangi & Co sent a letter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) detailing details of an ongoing divorce case between the two partners at Kiambu Courts. “We wish to draw your attention to the ongoing divorce proceedings between the parties (Divorce Cause No. MCDC E086 OF 2024 at Kiambu Magistrate Court) and a related children’s case Kabu’s criminal acts persist, the children of the marriage risk being rendered destitute. There are live gag orders in both matters prohibiting Mr Kabu from commenting on the case,” read part of the letter.

Kagwe Mungai and Sharon Mwangi

In June 2024, content creator Sharon Mwangi and musician Kagwe Mungai announced their breakup through a joint social media post.

They stated their decision to part ways was mutual and thanked their supporters for the love and prayers. They also requested privacy, saying they would not discuss the matter further.

 YY Comedian and Marya Okoth

Comedian YY and Marya Okoth were another duo whose breakup shocked the comedy world, especially since they had been together for three years, with no indication of a troubled ship. So, when Marya took to social media to announce an end to their relationship, it was a shock to many of their fans.

“Hello, we are saddened to let you know that Marya Okoth and YY Comedian will no longer be together due to unavoidable circumstances. Thank you for your love and support through our union. We expect individual privacy from each one of you. Thanks,” read her statement. Less than a fortnight later after the announcement, the comedian unveiled his new girlfriend, and even visited her parents’ home, to seek their blessings on their relationship. In a later interview, Marya denied that the two were chasing cloutsaying the two were are not special as every couple goes through their ups and downs.
