Even before the housemates hit the Big Brother Hotshots house this Sunday, the Internet is already abuzz with teams from the participating countries hyping their representatives.
“Let’s go Kenya, let’s go,” a TeamKenya Facebook group member wrote early this week as a debate began on whether Sabina and Alusa, the two Kenyan representatives have what it takes to bring the big cash reward home. “We are with you, rock that house,” another fan wrote congratulating Sabina who was unveiled on Friday last week.
Sabina, the little known 28-year-old Mombasa girl is oozing with confidence that she will last the 63-day experience in Big Brother’s Hotshots house and bring home the money.
“I entered Big Brother Hotshots to win the money and change my life and the lives of others. It’s something I’ve envisioned for a long time and it will give me a chance to show Africa that I am a star,” she said during an interview.
“I can entertain, but I’m also a human with problems just like anybody else,” she added. A finance degree holder who is also working on a post-graduate diploma in humanitarian studies and diplomacy, Sabina joins Alusa, a popular actor who also says he is in the competition to win.
Even though the two contestants look stronger than Kenya reps last year, it remains to be seem if they will get close to the feat rapper Prezzo achieved two years ago by coming in second best, the closest Kenya has ever come to winning the Big Brother Africa competition.
“The big problem with Kenya is that our competitors lack strategy and we hardly team up with other countries to keep our contestants in the house,” says Kevin, a 27-year-old Big Brother die hard. “East Africa countries don’t team up to keep their contestants in the competition. In fact, sometimes, Tanzania sides with countries in the south and that is why we fail,” he adds.
This year will be all about testing contestant’s talents. It is no wonder that most of the contestants are public figures in creative careers.
From Uganda are Ellah, a 23-year-old sales assistant and Esther, who happens to be the reigning Miss Uganda. Tanzania has Idris, a 21-year-old photographer based in Arusha and Lavenda a bachelor of arts and social sciences graduate who is also an artiste.
Nigeria has won the contest three times. In 2011, the show was won by Karen Igho from Nigeria and Wendall Parsons from Zimbabwe. The only time an East African won the show was in 2007 when Richard Dyle went home with the money. However, last year’s winner Dillish Mathews has Kenyan roots.
