The Miss Universe Organisation has confirmed that Italy Mora, the Miss Universe candidate from Panama, has been withdrawn from the 2024 pageant.

In an official statement released on it's website on 2 November 2024, the organisation explained that this decision followed a thorough review by their disciplinary committee.

“The Miss Universe organisation regrets to announce the withdrawal of Panama’s candidate from the Miss Universe 2024 pageant. This decision has been taken after a thorough evaluation by our disciplinary commission,” read the statement.

The organisation said that the committee, which is responsible for upholding the pageant's values and integrity, concluded that withdrawal was “the most appropriate course of action under the current circumstances.”

The organisation added, “It is important to note that we made this decision with the utmost respect for all parties involved. Our number one priority remains the welfare and transparency for all of our candidates, who exemplify diversity, talent, and dedication.”

It went on to stress the importance of maintaining confidentiality during the disciplinary process, describing confidentiality as “a fundamental pillar” in ensuring fairness and protecting the dignity of those involved.

Italy Mora responded to the decision on Instagram, sharing her version of events and expressing disappointment. According to Mora, she was notified about her removal as she was preparing to attend a gala night.

The Miss Universe Organisation informed her that she was being withdrawn due to a “non-compliance” issue concerning her room arrangements, which she admitted occurred when she entered her room briefly to apply makeup and collect personal items.

“Unfortunately, I trusted and followed instructions without measuring the consequences,” Mora wrote. “I would like to express that it was a severe measure and that it could have been solved with a dialogue or warning.”

Mora highlighted the emotional toll this decision has taken on her after months of preparation and dedication, adding, “This event has been difficult to assimilate emotionally, especially because of the time, effort, resources, and support of the people who made possible my preparation to represent my country.”

She extended her gratitude to her supporters and clarified her stance in the hope of dispelling any misconceptions about her departure. “I sincerely appreciate the support and affection I have received, and I withdraw my gratitude to all those who have trusted me during this process.”

The Miss Universe Organisation, while refraining from detailing specific reasons, reiterated its dedication to maintaining a respectful and supportive environment for all contestants.

“As we move forward, we reaffirm our dedication to these principles, inviting all our participants, supporters, and media to join us in this commitment. We kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of our Panama candidate during this time and to avoid unnecessary speculation that may negatively affect all parties involved.”

This withdrawal comes just two weeks ahead of the 73rd Miss Universe competition, which is scheduled to take place on 16 November 2024, in Mexico.

This year’s pageant is expected to showcase representatives from nearly 90 countries, with contestants competing in categories including evening wear, swimwear, and interviews.
