MTV Shuga Mashariki is making its much-anticipated return this May, and with it comes a fresh lineup of Kenyan talent.
The new season brings together a diverse group of actors, ranging from seasoned performers to rising stars, all poised to deliver compelling narratives that reflect real-life issues facing young people in Kenya.
Leading the cast are Serah Wanjiru, Basil Mungai, Matthew Ngugi, Wilson Muchemi, Fatuma Gichuru, Julie Brenda, Fridah Mumbe, Mariam Bishar and Makena Kahuha.
Each actor brings their unique style to the show, adding depth to the characters and themes that MTV Shuga has become known for.
Wanjiru, for instance, gained recognition in Netflix’s 'Volume' (2023), while Mungai made waves in 'Click Click Bang' (2022). Meanwhile, Ngugi, fresh off his lead role in 'Mo Faya' (2024), promises to bring intensity to his performance.
Wilson Muchemi, famous for his online comedic content, is making his TV debut, stepping away from digital skits to take on a more serious acting role. Similarly, Fatuma Gichuru, after a solid stage career, is landing her first major TV lead.
Julie Brenda, a past Best Actress winner at the African Smartphone Film Festival (2020) is also on the cast, while Fridah Mumbe, who bagged the Female Actor of the Year Award in 2023, is expected to bring a powerful presence.
Radio personality Mariam Bishar is also transitioning to TV for the first time, and Makena Kahuha, known for her work in 'Subterranea' (2024) and 'Country Queen' (2022), rounds out the cast with her extensive stage experience.
Set against the backdrop of campus life, the show continues its tradition of using storytelling to challenge societal norms. With a focus on issues like gender roles, peer pressure, mental health, and financial independence, MTV Shuga Mashariki seeks to spark conversations that matter.
The series is known for its raw, relatable narratives that resonate with young audiences, and this season is no different.
The cast was selected from a nationwide audition process held in October 2024, where over 1,600 hopefuls competed for a spot on the show.
Mitchelle Kimathi, Country Manager for the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, emphasized the significance of the show’s return.
“MTV Shuga Mashariki marks a bold new chapter in the Shuga universe. We are proud to bring together a diverse cast that authentically reflects Kenyan culture while addressing the complex challenges young people face daily,” she said.
The season is being directed by acclaimed Kenyan filmmakers Mkaiwawi 'Mkay' Mwakaba, June Ndinya and Likarion Wainaina.
While the storyline remains tightly under wraps, fans can expect the signature MTV Shuga mix of drama and real-life challenges, delivered through compelling performances and thought-provoking themes.
MTV Shuga Mashariki is expected to entertain while igniting vital conversations on agency, sexual and reproductive health, consent and informed decision-making, empowering young audiences across Kenya.
Through its episodes, the series offers an unflinching exploration of social dynamics, tackling themes of love, ambition, peer pressure, mental health and the power of community support.
With captivating performances and visually compelling storytelling, it aims to both entertain and empower to realise change: this is part of MTV SAF’s collaboration with Shujaaz under the Surround Sound Kenya Programme which seeks to challenge norms as they affect the outcomes of young people in Kenya.
Mkay highlighted the careful selection of the cast, saying; “We were intentional about assembling a team that truly represents the diversity of Kenyan youth. Our approach has delivered not just incredible talent but also individuals who can bring depth and authenticity to these stories.”
MTV Shuga has long been a platform for launching careers while addressing real-life social issues, and this season is expected to continue that tradition. With its dynamic cast and socially conscious storytelling, MTV Shuga Mashariki is set to be more than just a TV show—it’s a movement aimed at shaping the conversations that matter to Kenya’s youth.
