Universities are often seen as places of intellectual freedom, where students navigate their academic journeys with some degree of independence.

But at the University of Eldoret, one lecturer seems to have taken matters into his own hands, quite literally.

A now-viral video captures a tense classroom moment where a visibly agitated lecturer confronts a student, demanding to see his lecture notes. His tone is sharp, his patience thin.

“Show me your notes. You’re joking. People don’t come here to make noise and joke. Show me the notes from the past lecture and up to the last class. Do it fast!” he barks, his authority filling the room.

The student, clearly caught off guard, fumbles for an explanation. But the lecturer isn’t having any of it.

In the undated video, the lecturer then threatens to send the student out to fetch his notes.“Hiyo kitabu ingine iko wapi? Utaendea. You come to this class? Utaendea.” (Where’s your other book? You’ll go and get it. Do you even attend this class? You’ll go and get it.)

Adding to the student’s woes, the lecturer demands his registration number, presumably for further disciplinary action.

As expected, the video ignited a storm of reactions online. Some viewers sympathising with the student, recalling their own struggles with strict lecturers.

Paulo De Man said, “I rarely wrote notes, but I never failed in any exam, not even a RAT. Some lecturers should just shut up and do what took them to the lecture room."

James Situma, on the other hand, seemed to relive past trauma, "Reminds me of one Dr. Mulwa from Murang'a University. I’m still sweating."

Andrew Mboji, recognised the lecturer and his tough ways, "He would come by 6 am to arrange exam seating. You only get in and find your admin number on the chair."

But not everyone was against the lecturer’s stern approach. Some netizens fully supported his stance on academic discipline.

Essie Chelsea said, "As a parent, I fully support this lecturer. Students should take their schoolwork seriously. They are on campus to study, not to joke around."Tum Abraham echoed her sentiments, "I fully support Dr. Kegode. Keep instilling some seriousness in class."

While some see the lecturer’s outburst as unnecessary aggression, others view it as a much-needed wake-up call for students who treat university life too casually.

Either way, one thing is clear, at the University of Eldoret, skipping notes is no joke.
