Joanne Burgess, the former renowned dance judge celebrated for her sharp critiques and passion for the performing arts, is stepping into the dynamic world of politics.
The one-time Sakata Dance Competition judge has officially announced her candidacy for Member of Parliament (MP) in her native Bermuda, sparking curiosity and excitement both on the island and in Kenya.
Burgess earned widespread respect for her ability to deliver constructive criticism while championing discipline, teamwork, and creativity within the arts community.
Beyond the dance floor, she’s an accomplished author with four award-winning books to her name and played a pivotal role in education, founding The Cottage School and contributing to curriculum development. Her transition from entertainment to politics is both intriguing and groundbreaking.
In a public statement, Burgess shared, "Many of you may have seen my announcement about my candidacy for the PLP in Constituency 25. Since moving back to Bermuda two years ago, I’ve reconnected with our community, not just as a visitor, but as a neighbour, a mother, and someone facing the same challenges as you. Like so many, I’ve felt the weight of the high cost of living, the struggle to find affordable housing, concerns about healthcare, and the need for safer communities. These aren’t just political issues—they’re everyday realities. That’s why I’m stepping up to serve, to listen, and to help make real change happen."
Known for her vibrant presence on Sakata and her commitment to dance education, Burgess is running under the Progressive Labour Party (PLP), one of Bermuda’s three major political parties.
Her campaign will focus on key issues affecting Bermudians, and she’s eager to hit the campaign trail to engage directly with voters.
“As a new candidate, I’m excited to meet you, hear your concerns, and have real conversations about what matters most to our community. If you see me, stop and say hello, I want to listen, learn, and work alongside you to build a fairer, more equitable Bermuda for us all,” she added.
