Rising Kenyan artist Ila Nia has decided to undoubtedly switch up her tempo this year.
Her lates body of work is an Amapiano-infused single, “Pon Me,” which blends motivational lyricism and upbeat rhythms.
Known for her soulful Afro-pop hits like “Nataka” and “Haya,” the singer-songwriter now shifts gears with a track she describes as a “resilience anthem,” urging listeners to push through challenges and chase their dreams unapologetically.
Inspired by her personal journey, “Pon Me” merges Amapiano grooves with Afrobeat undertones. “It’s about going all out for your passion, no matter the obstacles,” says Ila Nia, who built the track around a melody symbolizing empowerment.
The lyrics, she adds, aim to uplift listeners facing adversity.
Her stage name,Ila Nia, reflects her artistic mission. Derived from the Swahili word “Nia” (purpose) and the last syllables of her birth name, Sheila, it embodies her goal to create music with intention.
“Every song must carry a meaning, it’s my way of making the world brighter,” she explains.
While past hits like “Haya”, featuring veteran artiste Nameless, explored themes of love and self-discovery, “Pon Me” marks a bold pivot. “This isn’t just personal, it’s a call to action,” she says,
As an emerging artist, Ila Nia acknowledges the hurdles of Kenya’s competitive industry, from building a fanbase to mastering the business side.
Yet, she credits consistency and a strong support network for her steady rise.
Looking ahead, she teases an upcoming EP and global ambitions: “I want to collaborate widely and take Kenyan sounds international.”
