How I got swindled: Gkon's music industry deception

 Rapper Gkon.

Gkon has been active in the music industry for over a decade, starting his journey in primary school, where he participated in school funkies and rap battles.

His career took a major leap forward when he signed with Jomino Entertainment. He then collaborated with Naiboi’s Pacho Entertainment, further honing his skills. Eventually, he established his own management label, Uyoma Entertainment.

Though born and raised in Nairobi, the talented rapper has also fallen victim to conmen in the city.

When he was still new to the industry, full of hope for a brighter future, Gkon’s desire to think outside the box led him to make some risky choices. “I remember wanting to go to Dubai and try my luck, and that’s when I fell into the hands of a rogue agency,” he recalls.

He says he met some agents who promised to assist with his documentation and everything concerning his successful departure. “They convinced me that I had to pay Sh150,000, and after some deliberation, I agreed. I asked my parents to lend me some money, and they obliged, giving me Sh80,000. However, the agents refused, saying it was too little.”

With Sh70,000 still needed, Gkon continued hustling for the remaining amount from his cousin and eventually managed to complete the deal.

Gkon signed documents and handed over his passport, believing the agents’ promises. They asked him to pay for a medical check-up, and when results were ready, things took a turn. Suspecting something was wrong, he visited their office, only to find it empty. Two years later, the conman was arrested, and Gkon was refunded.
