Your rapper's favourite rapper

The top five hip hop artistes in Kenya among peers are; Khaligraph Jones, Kitu Sewer, Nyashinski, Abbass and Scar [Courtesy]

Rap is a game of ego. Rapper X can’t work with rapper Y, rapper Z always throws shade at rapper M, who says rapper Z is beneath him.

But, they all know, deep down, who is better at their craft. In fact, rappers, since time immemorial (about 50 years) have always been accused, while some have admitted to ‘stealing’ styles from others.

The conversation about who is best is a never-ending ego game, and quite personal for some, like Khaligraph Jones, who couldn’t name five but did six, insisting, “Abbas is number one. The rest follow in no particular order.”

Or Kaa La Moto, who said he has a best three, with the two slots opened for upcoming acts.

According to Nimo Futuristic, hip-hop die-hard and industry insider, making a pick can be hard because the game changes, and some cats walk away at times.

“The game has evolved right now. My favourites don’t have new music,” she said, giving us a long list of her best emcess, that went into the 20s, from the 90s to recent times.
