WWE icon Sid Vicious dies of cancer

 The late Sid Vicious

Iconic wrestler Sid Eudy, popularly known as Sid Vicious, died on Monday aged 63 after a long battle with cancer.

The death of the six-time wrestling champion was announced by his son Gunnar Eudy who described him as a ‘man of strength’.

“He was a man of strength, kindness, and love, and his presence will be greatly missed,” Gunnar Eudy wrote about Vicious, who also went by the ring names Lord Humungous, Vicious Warrior, Sid Justice and Sycho Sid but was born Sidney Raymond Eudy on December 6, 1960.

In a statement, the WWE said: “Sid’s reputation as one of the toughest and most thrilling superstars cemented his legacy in WWE, and his influence can still be seen in wrestling rings around the world.

“WWE extends its condolences to Eudy’s family, friends and fans.”

He began his wrestling career in 1987 under the name Lord Humungous before signing with the World Championship Wrestling (WCW), defeating DeWayne Bruce on his debut on June 17, 1989.

Sid’s signature move was the ‘Powerbomb’ and he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1991, defeating Ted DiBiase.

However, after a failed drug test prior to his Wrestlemania match with Hulk Hogan, coupled with a feud with Ultimate Warrior and WWF management, Sid quit and went back to WCW in 1993.

A career-threatening injury in 2001 halted his progress as he broke his left leg in half, snapping the tibia and fibula after an awkward landing.

Sid later sued WCW, claiming that he was made to jump off the second rope against his objections. The injury forced a plot change in the SuperBrawl Revenge event.

The main event was supposed to be Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page, and Sid against Scott Steiner, Jeff Jarrett, and Road Warrior Animal but was rewritten as Kevin Nash versus Scott Steiner.

Two-time WWE Hall of Famer Booker T Huffman said Eudy’s impact on wrestling was “undeniable”, adding that he “paved the way for so many of us”.

“Without Sid Vicious, I don’t think my brother and I would have made it to WCW…My deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time,” he wrote on X.
