Belio Kipsang: Combating stigma key to inclusive education

Education leaders and stakeholders are calling for more support to tackle challenges in inclusive education, particularly for children with disabilities.

This was the main message during the opening of the Schools Connect Dialogue 2024 organised by the British Council.

The event is being held in Nairobi from Tuesday, October 15, to Thursday, October 17.

Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, who officiated the meeting, said although the country has made progress towards inclusive education, significant challenges remain.

“We have seen increased enrolment for children with disabilities but they still face barriers such as stigma and inadequate infrastructure,” said Kipsang.

He called on education partners to support efforts to improve the system, adding, “We need more resources to address these challenges and create an environment where all learners feel accepted.”

Lieke Van de Wield, a representative from the British Council, noted that partnerships are essential in achieving inclusive education.

“We must work together to ensure that every child has access to quality education,” said Van de Wield.

She emphasised the need for innovative solutions and collaboration among all stakeholders.

The Schools Connect Dialogue aims to create a platform for sharing best practices and discussing strategies for enhancing inclusive education.

Participants include educators, government officials and representatives from non-governmental organisations.
