"Children of Blood and Bone" novel set to hit the big screen

Nigerian-American Tomi Adeyemi’s young adult romantic fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone will make its way to IMAX in January 2027, by Paramount Pictures. The movie will feature a star-studded cast of Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Idris Elba, Damson Idris, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cynthia Erivo, and Amandla Stenberg.

This adaptation of Tomi’s debut novel, to be filmed in South Africa, will be directed by The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Viola and Thuso will be meeting on screen once again for this much awaited film starring in “The Woman King” in 2022.

"Children of Blood and Bone" tells the story of a young girl, Zélie Adebola (to be played by Thuso), who lives in a fictional African country, Orïsha. Its ruler, King Saran (to be played by Chiwetel), decided to turn off the magic of turned diviners among their community, including Zélie’s mother, so that he can oppress them. The story follows the diviners’ fight for the restoration of their magic and against tyrannical rule. Viola will play Mama Agba, the oldest living magician of Orïsha. Film and television actor Regina King is also said to be in negotiation talks for the role of Queen Nehanda.

Thuso couldn’t contain her elation and gratitude for playing the lead.

“Children of Blood and Bone was gifted to me in 2019, and, truly, it’s one of the best gifts I’ve received. Upon, reading it, I fell in love with it to the point that I made it a prayer point, a bold ask to God to be the lead of this amazing story,” shared Thuso in an Instagram post.

Tomi, who disclosed that her writing of the book was inspired by films “Hunger Games” and “Harry Potter” franchises, was only 23 years old during the book’s publication.

“Children of Blood and Bone” garnered literary success with a debut in the New York Times Best-Seller list upon its release. It is one of the three books off her Legacy of Orisha trilogy with the other two “Children of Virtue and Vengeance” and “Children of Anguish and Anarchy” equally winning widespread praise.

The book can be found in major bookshops in Kenya.
