Kirimari MCA Morris ‘Collo’ Nyaga has started an initiative dubbed Jenga Biz Na Collo that will see 500 dairy cows issued to poor residents.

The first time MCA has already issued 18 Fresian cows to local women groups acquired at between Sh40,000 and Sh50,000.

He has already spent Sh1 million from the Ward Development Fund to purchase and vaccinate the cows donated to the women groups. He plans in the next budgets to set aside more allocations for the project to hit the target of 500 cows.

“The beneficiaries are also trained on best farming practices. When the cows start producing milk, the beneficiaries will have a source of income from the sale of milk ending reliance on handouts from politicians,” says Nyaga.

He wants the government to support farmers by scrapping taxes on feeds and other farm inputs. Juliet Muthanje, a beneficiary from Njukiri village, said she looks forward to a source of income while her children will be well nourished.

Meanwhile, Embu County Government plans to start a Sh300 million milk processing plant to step up value addition in the dairy sector.

The plant to be set on a 3.5-acre piece of land will have a capacity of processing 48,000 litres of milk daily.
