Bring back alcoblow, but address all sticking issues

The number of crashes on our roads, especially in the last one month, has been alarming. Only last Saturday, 16 people died in a bus accident along Kakuma-Lodwar highway.

We need to put brakes on this blood-letting urgently.  It is for this reason that Transport Minister Amos Kimunya should be commended for pledging to re-introduce brethalysers to battle drunken driving. There is little doubt that drunken driving is a leading cause of road crashes.

We don’t expect Kimunya to have an easy ride introducing the brethalysers, popularly known as alcoblow. Those who love to drink and drive might  put up a fight to oppose the gadgets. But this should not deter him. The minister must however ensure that measures are put in place to discourage rogue police officers from cashing in on this devices. He must also  assuage public fears on the safety of alcoblow in a country with a high prevalence of air-borne diseases such as tuberculosis.

Finally, Kimunya must realise that only a multifaceted approach-tackling all  causes of crashes-will end the carnage on our roads.
