Six-year-old girl rushed to hospital after drinking 'glue' from milk container

UK: A six-year-old girl was left screaming in shock after she took a gulp of milk from a supermarket bottle but was given a mouthful of glue instead.

Little Jessica Bamford was rushed to hospital after taking a swig from a container of full fat milk.

The youngster had just begun drinking the liquid when she suddenly screeched as a ‘white hardened substance’ formed itself in and around her mouth.

After spitting out what she had begun drinking, Jessica was taken to the nearby Derriford Hospital in Plymouth by her frantic mum Samantha.

When doctors examined the child, they discovered that the substance, which she did not fully swallow, 'smelt like false nail glue’.

The gluey substance was then removed from Jessica’s mouth but left her with red marks and feeling ‘shaken up’.

Samantha, a 31 year old mother of six, was left with glue all over her fingers after the incident last Wednesday.

Jessica didn't swallow any of the contaminated milk which her dad Dwain had bought from an Iceland store in Plymouth the previous day.

Samantha, from Devonport, Plymouth, said:"It's just disgusting. She freaked out and was very shaken.

"She remembers spitting it out in the sink the second she felt something was wrong. It's just lucky she didn't ingest it because this could have been a completely different situation."

An Iceland spokesman said:"We are sorry to hear about this issue but we would like the chance to investigate."

Samantha has contacted the dairy who told her she needs to go through proper complaints procedure, which could be hampered by the hospital claiming it will take seven days from the day Jessica was treated to release a form confirming she was treated.

The mother, who also tried unsuccessfully to contact local Trading Standards, said she fears by that time the milk could have gone off and been further spoiled - harming any chance to trace what the original problem was.
