Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Azim Palmer has borrowed a saying by Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s founding president.
Kartel, who’s currently in jail updated his Instagram bio with a quote by Jomo stating, “There will be nothing from Heaven. We must all work...to save ourselves from poverty, ignorance, and disease."
The quote is from Jomo’s Independence Day message to Kenyans pointing out that despite attaining freedom, the citizens would have to work hard for the nation’s prosperity.
"Many people may think that, now there is Uhuru, now I can see the sun of freedom shining, richness will pour down like manna from Heaven,” part of Jomo’s speech read.
Murder charges
The ‘She Say’ singer is currently serving life imprisonment following his sentencing in 2014 for the murder of an associate, Clive "Lizard" Williams.
His co-accused were ‘My Life’ singer Shawn Storm, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John.
Kartel, who has a legion of followers will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 35 years in prison.
Intimidating female juror
A month ago, a female juror was discharged from Kartel’s appeal to have his conviction overturned.
According to prosecutor Jeremy Taylor, the ‘World Boss’, as he’s known by fans, approached the son of the female member of the jury in prison and said something to him.
The female juror told the judge about her concerns and asked to be relieved from jury duty, to which the judge complied and sent her home.
Gaza gang
Following a story by The Nairobian about Kenya’s teenage gang Gaza which draws inspiration from Kartel, the singer came out to distance himself from the group.

According to the article which ran in 2017, the gang looked up to him as a god with some former members claiming that they would act and behave as directed by Kartel.
Speaking through a TV presenter, the father of two stated that “Kartel does not support these things. This is not part of Kartel. Whoever is misguiding these youths should remember that music is very powerful, and what they are probably doing is that they are using Kartel’s powerful music to indoctrinate these guys.”
