Dr Evans Kidero and Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko

Dr Evans Kidero has today handed over his seat to Mike Mbuvi Sonko as the second Governor of Nairobi County.

“My wife Susan says she is glad to have me back from the other woman-Nairobi,” he joked as he handed over the documents to Governor Mike Sonko.

In a ceremony attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, Kidero clarified that contrary to reports doing rounds, he recognized Mike Sonko’s win in the general elections.

Kidero said that while the two were political foes, they had a lot in common. “Mike Sonko and I are like two envious lovers,” he said in his speech attributing their competition to their love for Nairobi.

“We fought, pushed and often called each other names to prove our worth to Nairobi...but Nairobi has chosen you Sonko,” Kidero said to wild cheers of the crowd.

“I am aware that God chooses leader…and I wish to thank people of Nairobi for electing myself and my deputy as first Governor and Deputy since the promulgation of the constitution.

“Nairobi has witnessed a smooth transfer of power “, he said recognizing the maturity of democracy among the citizenry. “When I saw the red jubilee hats, I thought that you’d say ‘Kidero must go’, but that has not happened, “ he joked

Kidero reflected on his journey as Governor saying that he was glad he had changed Nairobi County and had left it better than he found it touching on few areas that he had improved. “When I was sworn in, Nairobi county employees had not been paid for long time, but that changed”

He urged the new Governor Mike Sonko not to entertain tribalism and mediocrity because this was the reality of taking up the mantle.

“There will be tough times, and those who will try to distract you,” Kidero warning Sonko of the looming challenges at City hall.

Mike Sonko won the Governor seat with over 800,000 thousand votes toppling Dr. Evans Kidero to become the second governor of Nairobi.
