A Nyahururu-based tout, who allegedly placed an unknown amount of money on Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu retaining his seat has committed suicide after Irungu lost to Ndiritu Mureithi.
The body of David Mathenge was found hanging inside his house at Leshau trading centre in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua County on August 14.
The 41-year-old left a suicide note that read, “Sababu ya kujinyonga ni Governor Irungu kushindwa kwa kura (I have killed myself because Governor Irungu lost the vote).
Speaking to The Nairobian on phone, Nyandarua North police boss Timon Odingo confirmed the incident.
“It is not clear whether he lost his money after betting on the outgoing governor, but we want to urge young people not to take their lives because of politics,” Odingo said.
The contest between Irungu and Governor-elect Muriithi was too close, prompting some of the residents to bet on who will win.
