In September this year, a 29 year old Simon Kamau fell in love and married his mother in law and abandoned his wife.
According to local news outlets, Ashley Kimani, the mother-in-law had come to stay with the couple in their home in Kinoo when an affair began between the two.
Kamau’s wife found out about the forbidden affair, and asked her mother to stay away but she refused.
Religious leaders have cited being parents when young as one of the factors influencing such trends.
Peter Maina Wambugu, a counsellor and religious leader says that when people get children when they are young, they end up looking at their parents as their age mates.
“When for instance you get children when you are 20, by the time you hit 40 that child is 20. Most children whose age difference between they and their parents is 15-12 years tend to look at their parents as fellow age mates. And in this case, there is no respect between these two,” he says.
Wambugu also says that religious leaders have failed in their role in shaping the society.
“Nowadays everyone is a pastor. Some pastors we have seen have been caught in compromising situations with their congregants’ wives.
These are the examples our children are growing up seeing on a daily basis,” he says adding that the society started decaying from the parents.
