Movie Review : Everest

Director: Baltasar Kormákur

Cast: Jason Clarke, Ang Phula Sherpa, Thomas M Wright

Genre: Documentary, Disaster

Duration:121minutes

Rating: 7/10

Two adventure consultants start an ascent to the highest point on Earth - the summit of Mount Everest - on the morning of May 10, 1996.

With little warning, a violent snow storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers who were trapped on a high ridge, in one of the most devastating blizzards ever encountered by man.

Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds.

Thumbs Up

The cinematography and lighting used to display the blunt serves and flaunting of mother nature’s prowess is powerful and further captures the downright indifference mother nature has to human survival.

The story is beautifully told and justified in favour of nature, which in any other setting would just be a grisly end to human life.

Thumbs Down

The film seems to drag and feels a little under-developed especially in the beginning. Though the best actors were involved, one feels like the chemistry is a bit lacking and their character development is neglected in favour of magnificent views of the mountains and snow storms. Though there is little to complain about the awe-inspiring views, they would have to strike a balance.

Verdict

This is not a movie about a few human beings who tried to conquer a mountain, but rather a mountain that is no respecter of humans.

At the end of the day, only one star remains; the magnificent Everest. Watch it for a different kind of action.
