One of the super cops recently unmasked by The Nairobian was a casualty in the Westgate mall bloody aftermath.
Stephen Lelei (inset) was shot in the right leg by terrorists in the Westgate mall siege.
He was among the first team of officers to arrive at the scene immediately after the alarm was raised.
Lelei is the OCS of Kabete police station. He was attempting to fight the terrorists when they overpowered him, thanks to their superior weapons. He has since been treated and discharged.
His boss, Mathew Gwiyo, the Dagoretti OCPD, described Lelei as a courageous officer who could have thwarted the terror attacks had there been sufficient backing.
“He was among the first officers to attend to the scene thinking they were robbers. That officer is daring. He is a good officer. If they were many then probably they could have defeated the assailants,” said Gwiyo.
Lelei was among a selected team of few brilliant officers The Nairobian recently recognised for their bravery and commitment.
Others included Samson Ogero fondly known as Kisii, Habel Mwareria (Tyson), Joel Chepsang (Sang), Jennifer Mutuku (Bensouda), James Onyango, Simon Nakomolo Ekeno, Timothy Kamunde and Patrick Shaw.
