Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has successfully undergone a surgery to remove goitre at The Nairobi Hospital.

In a short video clip she uploaded on her tweeter account after the surgery, she explained that the surgery that was done on January 10 was successful and she was recuperating well.

She further disclosed that had her two thyroids had to be removed as both were found to be in bad shape.

“Initially we were hoping to just remove the thyroid on the section that had the goitre but the doctor said when he gets in is when he will make a decision.

“So when he got in he realized that the other thyroid was not in very good condition and he decided to remove both. Thus I have no thyroid left or right. I will be on medication called thyroxin for the rest of my life to do what thyroid normally does,” she said.

Earlier on in a clip she uploaded before going into surgery room, Ms Pasaris revealed that she had struggled with the condition for the last ten years and after consulting her doctor, she settled on having the operation done locally despite objection from close family and friends.

“I have had this goiter and it has been growing over the last ten years. Now it has become more recognizable, I choke at night sometimes and I find it hard to maintain my steady breath. I went to see my doctor and told me it can be done very easily in Kenya and there is no need to travel abroad,” the Women Rep said.

She challenged Kenyans to have confidence in their doctors and institutions while urging the Kenya Bureau of Standards to test every salt that is locally sold to ensure it has accepted levels of iodine.

A goitre is a swelling in the neck resulting from an enlarged thyroid gland and is associated with a thyroid that is not functioning properly.
