Daystar University Athi River and Nairobi campuses have been closed indefinitely following student unrest.

A circular from the university’s senate has given students and staff until noon today, 12th April, to vacate the premises. For international students, a desk has been set up to offer direction and guidance.

A meeting between the Senate and the student leadership failed to kick off on Wednesday after ant-riot police were called and locked the students in.

"The meeting was being held on the 7th floor of the university main building when the administration called in the police with orders to beat up the students. They even unleashed tear gas to students and parents who were at the meeting," a student was quoted saying.

The university’s student body President Alloys Otieno said that the meeting hit a snag after the school failed to produce an audit report.

"We started the meeting ... the students demanded that Senate members lift suspensions of staff and student associations and hand over the forensic audit report as had been promised

"It was unfortunate that acting VC James Kombo had confidently indicated that the report was ready but did not produce it when asked for it," said Otieno.

The University has been on edge for a while now after students boycotted classes demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Timothy Wachira.
