A 30-year-old man died after he fell from the staircase of a popular bar in Kilimani, Nairobi, over the weekend.

Moses Baraka, a manager at the Old Mutual insurance company, was walking down the stairs at the popular B Club when he slid from the first floor and landed head first.

Mr Baraka had been at the club from Friday night until Saturday 5am with friends when they decided to leave.

According to guards at the club, Baraka took the staircase to the ground floor while his friends took the lift. One of the guards said he saw the victim climb the rail of the staircase and tried to slide down before he slipped and fell to the ground floor.

"Of course he was drunk and could not control himself. No one pushed him as is being claimed," said the guard.

Other witnesses said the club was still full when word went round that a reveller had slipped and fallen to the ground floor. By the time they got out, the victim had been rushed to hospital.

A family spokesman said they would issue a statement after a postmortem was conducted.

Police said they were investigating the incident as Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said Baraka was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

"We understand he sustained fatal head injuries from the fall. A team is on the ground investigating the tragedy," said Mr Koome.

He said police had recorded statements from the club managers and witnesses regarding the death.

The club has been in bad books in the recent past, with police saying there have been many complaints of assault.

For instance, one James Ndonyi complained he was assaulted inside the club last month.

Mr Ndonyi said his aggressors had never been apprehended despite his reporting the matter at Kilimani Police Station.

Another reveller, William Otieno, was said to have sought medical treatment on January 7 following an assault at the club the previous day.
