Initially every woman had one very precious thing that they guarded with all their efforts. Back then, it was a disaster and undoing for a woman to lose her virginity at a tender age, because no man in his senses wouldn’t risk to be associated with.
In contrary modernity has faced out the fallacious analogy of ‘purity’ as a prerequisite for marriage and it is even demonized for those women who are found to be pure. It was a sign of good morality to a woman and her parents would gain more respect, leave a side dowry quoted being hefty.
According to most 21st century women they view virginity as being old fashioned and conservative. Take for instance Loice, a fashionist in Bungoma town, who was once mocked by her college mates when she revealed to them that she was still virgin. “They all remained in awe of shock and murmured in hushed tones when I revealed to them that I am a virgin” she says. She further notes that most women are ashamed of it and will better keep it a secret or risk being mocked by those who refer themselves as trendy.
Most surprising some women doesn’t see any importance of virginity in the modern generation as the attention has been focused on other aspects like physical attribute education and behavior. According to Tracy, a teacher in Kakamega most men will be more attracted to a woman’s beauty, education and behavior. “Most today’s men will be more focused on looks and whether you’re educated or not” she says. She further adds that virginity is a preserve of the saved and those who still value traditional values.
It is also worthy noting that some women have been left by their lovers on realization that they are virgin. According to Derrick, a banker in Bungoma town narrates how he dumped his former lover upon realizing that she was virgin. “I had to end the relationship” he says. He adds that most of them are not romantic and this is a total turn off to most men.
In present day it is not a surprise to see men marrying commercial sex workers or even women who have kids at tender age. The focus whether the woman befits what a man desires. “The important focus is whether the woman has what I am in search for” Derrick adds. He further notes that if the focus is reversed to be based on virginity overs 70% of women will fail the test.
