Miss World Kenya crown holder Evelyn Njambi was voted among the five top beauties in the Miss World Top Model category during the international event whose gala was held last night.

Evelyn, who together with her Kenyan team got a special opportunity to showcase Kenyan fashion during the competition, beat over 100 other models from across the globe to emerge among the favourites in the category that was won by Miss World China.

"Evelyn has truly done us proud and we are happy with her performance. We would also like to thank Miss World Organization Chairman Julia Morley for giving Kenya a chance to showcase Kenyan fashion during the competition," said Terry Mungai, the Miss World Kenya pageant holder.

The 66th Miss World was chosen last night in a redefined event that was expected to mark a new era in the pageant's production.

The 117 participating delegates have been in Washington DC for three weeks taking part in preliminary events including photo shoots, videos, rehearsals and fast-track competitions.

The beauties were welcomed this year by the official hotels Hyatt Regency Washington DC and Gaylord National Harbor Resort.

The televised gala took place at the brand new MGM National Harbor Theatre with the latest in state-of-the-art technology and a capacity for 3,000 seated spectators.

Miss World changed its format for this year, replacing the traditional leaderboard with a different system of election. The "Dances of the World" segment has disappeared, and the basic elements of a beauty pageant continue to be present. This year, 20 semi-finalists were chosen (15 by preliminary judging and five as the winners of the fast-track competitions).

Immediately after they were reduced to 10 (nine by the judges and the winner of the popular vote, regardless of whether she is in the Top 20 or not).

Then the top five finalists were chosen and from them the new Miss World was to be picked.

Eventually, 19-year-old Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico was crowned Miss World 2016 on Sunday, edging out runners-up from the Dominican Republic and Indonesia.
