World Snail Racing Championships

More than 150 snails last week took part in a slow but colourful World Snail Racing Championships in Congham, England.

The race that happened on a damp cloth in a field saw the slow but sure creatures race to the finish line in a competition that dates back to 1960s.

"Some of the snails, many which were plucked from gardens, had their shells painted in bright colours with stickers attached to them indicating race number," reported Reuters.

The winner of the race was a snail named Larry owned by one Tara Beasley, taking 2 minutes and 20 seconds to complete the 33cm course.

"It has not really sunk in. I entered the event facing several challenges but now Larry is a champion. It feels great," Beasley said.
