Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke

Lucy Maitai, the Nairobi City County Fleet Manager is awaiting the verdict of an executive committee investigating claims she authorised the misuse of Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke’s official car in August.

She was interdicted on September 3 for releasing Mueke’s vehicle to the county’s communications director Walter Mong’are alias Nyambane, on August 30, to attend an event in Kisii.

Mueke had reportedly wanted to use the car on September 6, but the vehicle could not be traced. The action was viewed as an act of gross insubordination eliciting heated debate in and out of City Hall.

County Secretary Lilian Ndegwa said she had received complaints that the officer had on several other occasions re-assigned the vehicle for other duties.

“This happened despite verbal instructions not to assign the vehicle for other duties, as doing so would inconvenience the deputy governor,” said Ndegwa.

Maitai appeared before her bosses and denied accusations of misconduct. The county’s Human Resource Management Advisory Committee was convened on October 8 and recommended that she be reinstated, but the executive committee, which sat on November 5 will have the final say on the matter.
