Central Kenya has achieved a 92 per cent transition rate to secondary school, according to Regional Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga.

Mr Nyagwanga stated that based on a status report from regional education office, Murang'a County had achieved 99 per cent transition.

"A total of 135,427 students in Central sat the national examinations and 124,000 had reported to secondary schools," he said.

He said the 11,427 students not accounted for might have joined private schools while the others were candidates who sat the exam in prisons.

He insisted that the Government had released funds to ease financial strain in the schools.

Early last month, school heads raised the alarm over strain on resources due to high transition to secondary school.

A spot check in secondary schools revealed increased enrolment that was not matched with expansion of facilities.

Nyeri High School Principal J K Maina said the situation was manageable, but there was need to urgently address the issue in the next two years.

"When the first class under the 100 per cent transition rate is in Form Four, we will be stretched beyond capacity," said Mr Maina.
