NAIROBI: Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has automatically promoted (to the next job grade) all the 16 teachers who emerged top in the national performance appraisal system contest.
The 8 principals and 8 teachers underwent a rigorous performance appraisal system (complete with interviews and written examinations) right from school level to national level.
This means that 8 teachers competed for the principal of the year (Poya) award and a similar number contested the teacher of the year (Toya) award.
Only one emerges tops under each category.
The exercise culminates in a nations award ceremony conducted during the annual secondary school heads conference in Mombasa.
Previously the top performers were only given certificates from the various sponsors and the kesssha secretariat.
However, TSC yesterday officially took the teacher performance reward system and noted that the appraisal kit shall be tightened and made more competitive in coming years.
TSC chairperson Lydia Nzomo said all the 16 teachers who participated in the various categories will be awarded and also promoted to the next grade.
The candidates contest from regional to national level.
Under the exercise, the teachers are tasked to demonstrate step by step measures they have taken to raise education levels in their schools.
Parameters include quality education subject performance, gender and curriculum implementation
