Kisumu County is set to host another university college in an effort to expand access to higher education.
Mt Kenya University targets to enrol at least 1,000 students once it opens the campus in September.
The institution’s founder and chairman Simon Gicharu said there has been public demand to take their services closer to the people because the number of students from the region is expanding.
“We are just responding to the public demand that we open another branch in Kisumu and we shall do that by end of next year,” he said.
Mr Gicharu who was among the few Kenyans feted by President Kibaki for his contribution to the development of education was speaking during a tour of Kisumu.
He was awarded Chief of the Burning Spear credit by the President during Jamhuri Day.
Speaking to The Standard On Sunday, Gicharu said Kisumu would host the institution’s ninth campus.
He said courses in public health, medical laboratory sciences, nursing and education will be offered in the first phase, while pharmacy and engineering in the second phase,” he said.
