ISIOLO: A police constable was apprehended Sunday at Archers Post trading centre in Samburu East for soliciting bribes from motorists.
Isiolo-based Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) undercover detectives, had used a businessman to lay a trap for the constable.
The detectives gave James Mithika, whose truck had been impounded and driver detained, Sh2,000 to give as bribe to the constable.
EACC Upper Eastern Regional Acting Deputy Director Ignatius Wekesa, said his detectives had laid a trap for the officer after receiving a complaint from Mr Mithika.
Mr Wekesa said the suspect had demanded Sh3,000 from the owner of the truck in order to release both the vehicle and the driver.
"The owner of the truck negotiated the amount of bribe from Sh3,000 to Sh2,000. He thereafter reported to our office and the trap was laid," he added
The constable, upon sensing danger, took two notes from his pocket and tore them into pieces, seconds before the detectives pounced on him. However, it emerged that he left a Sh1,000 marked note intact.
"The police officer will be taken to court," Wekesa said.
He spent the weekend behind bars at Isiolo Police Station and is expected to appear in court today.
The Archers Post incident is the sixth in the region. Five officers, two from Isiolo and three from Meru are facing charges of soliciting bribes from motorists at Meru High Court.
