he Murang'a County government has partnered with a local Non-Governmental Organisation to implement a school feeding programme in a bid to improve education standards.
The county government and the NGO Food for Education have been providing porridge to 42,000 learners in the Early Childhood Education Centre (ECDE), and have now extended the partnership to provide lunch to select primary schools on a pilot basis.
Governor Irungu Kang’ata said the feeding programme will be introduced in select primary schools; St Marys in Kiharu with 306 pupils, Makomboki (Kigumo) with 360 pupils, Thaara (Maragwa) with 430 pupils, Kirungu (Mathioya) with 200 pupils and Kanyenyaini (Kangema) with a population of 205 pupils.
Muthiria, Kiriaini, Wanjerere and Gikuu Primary Schools were enrolled in the programme on May 20, 2024.
Kang’ata said parents will pay Sh20 sharing for the plate of food which will be subsidised by the county and the NGO.
“This is a voluntary programme and any school interested in participating can make inquiries with the Education Chief Officer Leonard Guchu,” said the governor.
