School feeding programme boosts enrollment in Wajir

Speaking at Jogbaru Primary School during a programme monitoring session, Ali said the children are also healthier.

The programme is implemented by the National Council for Nomadic Education in Kenya (NACONEC) and the Ministry of Education.

The initiative aims at addressing malnutrition, especially of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Wajir East Education officer, Nur Ibrahim attributed the high enrollment to the nutritious meals offered to the children.

"We Appreciate Ministry of Education for rolling out this programme. As a marginalised area, the programme has ensured food reaches every learner and this has kept them in schools," Nur said.

He said the programme has improved attendance and academic performance of students in the region.

Wajir East Deputy County Commissioner, Said Abdalla lauded the positive impact of the programme.

"We are thrilled to see the tangible benefits of the school feeding programme in Wajir. It has not only enhanced nutrition among students but has also created a conducive learning environment," said Abdala

Ms Fatuma Ali, a teacher at Wajir Primary School said the students are now energetic and concentrate in class.

"Before the school feeding programme, many students would come to school hungry, affecting their concentration and performance. Now, with nutritious meals provided daily, we have noticed a significant improvement in their energy levels and academic performance," she said.

Parents and and community leaders who spoke at the event lauded the programme.

Mohamed Abdi, a parent, said: "The school feeding programme has lifted a burden off our shoulders. Knowing that our children receive proper meals at school gives us peace of mind and encourages us to support their education."

Stakeholders urged with the government to sustain and extend the feeding programme more schools in the county.

Community leaders emphased the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing education and nutrition for all children.
