What started as a night of fun for Joan Nzomo, 28, and a man she was with turned into tragedy.
Detectives are trying to piece together how Nzomo died while the man she was with was admitted to hospital nursing life-threatening stab wounds.
On Saturday morning at around 3 am, CCTV footage at an apartment block in Kasarani recorded Nzomo staggering home while in the company of a man.
The man, who has since been identified as the owner of the house, looked happy in the company of his girlfriend.
Hours later, a caretaker of an adjacent building reported to Kasarani Stadium Police Station that the body of a woman had been found in the compound of his flat.
Pushed to death
Initially, it was believed the half-naked woman may have been pushed to her death. There have been several such cases within the Kasarani neighbourhood.
Yesterday, detectives from the Nairobi Area Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau opened investigations into the case. The investigators managed to track down the man who was last seen in the company of the dead woman.
The man had been moved to a hospital within Kasarani where he is receiving treatment for stab wounds in the chest and stomach.
Police said the man had eight stab wounds and was unconscious when he was brought to the hospital.
By yesterday afternoon, the man had regained consciousness and was able to speak to the investigators.
"He did not know that the woman is now dead and had no idea how he ended up in the hospital," said an officer familiar with the matter. The man is now under the guard of the police since he is being considered a murder suspect in the death of Nzomo, said the officer.
Inside the man's house on the 10th floor of the building, the sitting room told a different story.
Police found bottles of whisky in the sitting room, indicating that the duo had a good time before the tragic turn of events. On the floor and sofa, there were splatters of blood, further providing clues into the events that transpired in the house on the night of Friday and Saturday morning.
Kasarani DCI is now pursuing two possible theories for the incident.

The first theory is that Nzomo may have attacked the boyfriend, after which she attempted suicide.
The second theory is that the man may have thrown the woman to the ground, after which he attempted suicide.
At the city mortuary, records at the facility revealed that Nzomo's body did not have any visible injuries other than swelling from a fall.
