The saying "Hard work never goes unrewarded" fuelled her perseverance.

Esther Wachuka stands out among students who excelled in the recently released 2023 KCSE exams, securing an impressive A- with 75 points. She emerged as the top student at Kwang'ethe Secondary School in Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu County.

Wachuka received the news of her outstanding performance on a Tuesday morning. She reflected on the challenges she faced since her father's passing in October 2020, which left her mother and three siblings grappling with difficulties in securing necessities. "Despite the hardships, including issues of food, clothing, and shelter, I remained focused on my studies, aspiring for a better life for my family," she said.

Wachuka's resilience and determination did not go unnoticed by her teachers, who recognised her potential and provided extra assistance whenever possible.

"One of her strengths is that she spoke out, and we were able to support her," said Josephine Nyaga, her Guidance and Counselling teacher.

Wachuka attributes her success to her mother's unwavering support during tough times.

"I also thank the principal and the deputy principal for allowing me to be in school without paying school fees and teachers who supported me in every aspect," she added.

Serving as the Christian Union leader, Wachuka maintained a balance in all her subjects.

"It was a prayer answered for us," said principal Mary Kiai.

Wachuka's aspiration now is that her remarkable achievement catches the attention of a generous sponsor who will support her university education. Her dream is to become a doctor.
