Senior staff from the National Heroes Council visited Kisii ahead of the planned research on the community's heroes and heroines.

A key mandate of the National Heroes Council is to research national heroes.

The research contributes to commemorating national heroes through the development of publications, audio-visual materials, and exhibitions as well as the establishment of monuments that aim at preserving their legacies.

Deputy Director of Heroes Research and Monuments at the National Heroes Council Dr David Mbuthia led a team to Kisii County to research on Moraa Ng'iti, her warrior nephew Otenyo Nyamaterere and other liberation heroes from the region.

Moraa was a renowned prophetess and medicine woman among the Abagusii and was involved in the liberation struggle. She was honoured posthumously as a national heroine at the 2023 Mashujaa Day celebration.

According to Mbuthia, information collected from the research will be documented and used to tell the history of the national hero.

Senator Essy Okenyuri has been agitating for the recognition of the community's heroes. She says the heroes shall not lay forgotten.
