Turkana County government has lifted the ban on fishing in Lake Turkana after it halted fishing of fingerlings.

The ban was imposed six months ago after fishermen engaged in illegal fishing using undersized nets.

There had been growing concerns over the rampant harvesting of small-size fish that had threatened to destroy breeding areas.

The county fisheries department raised alarm which led to the ban. The fisheries officers are also carrying an awareness campaign on the consequences of illegal fishing in the Lake.

The department said it will demarcate fish breeding sites to protect breeding habitats.
